Scania Deploys Electric Trucks to LKAB

An electric Scania Heavy Tipper and an electric crane truck were deployed to LKAB’s mine in Malmberget in northern Sweden, the supplier reported. The company said the development is part of a larger effort to shift to electric vehicles there.

“The electric trucks are part of an ambition to set a new standard for sustainable mining, where fossil-fuel-free is used all the way,” said Peter Gustavsson, project manager.

The heavy tipper has a total weight, including load, of 49 mt and will move residual products. Scania said the truck is “the first of its kind” in underground mining. It is “another really big step on the journey toward sustainable transport solutions across all applications,” said Frederik Allard, head of E-mobility. The crane truck is purpose-built to transport drill steel to drill rigs. It will charge at the depot and, possibly, at mobile charging sites, Scania said.

The vehicles are expected to start operations at LKAB during 2022.
