Metso launched the VPX filter for tailings dewatering and introduced its related comprehensive tailings management concept. Leadership at the company said the latter improves water, chemicals and ore conservation while extracting the remaining minerals. “It allows transforming legacy practices in tailings management into a new, positive value-creation model,” Victor Tapia, president, mining equipment, Metso, said. The concept seeks to filter and dry tailings, which can then be stacked. Results reportedly include both capex and opex savings. The technology enabling the concept, the VPX filter, is described as a next-generation filtration solution enabling maximum water recovery and reuse. The filter has up to 25 bars operating pressure, and is capable of 90% water recovery, the company reported. It is equipped with a fully electromechanical drive system and no hydraulics. The filter is scalable and easily transportable in standard containers, Metso reported.
